Chapter 1

 Early Life and Struggles

Muhammad Hafeez was born on October 17, 1980, in Sargodha, a city in Punjab, Pakistan. From a young age, Hafeez was drawn to the game of cricket, much like many of his peers. The streets of Sargodha became his playground, where he honed his skills using a tape ball, a common practice in Pakistan that simulates the conditions of leather-ball cricket. Growing up in a middle-class family, Hafeez faced numerous challenges. His family supported his passion for cricket, but the lack of facilities and financial constraints meant that his journey would be an uphill battle.

Hafeez first played for Number One Model High School Sargodha, where he was at first unable to book his spot on the cricket team. Then he started playing tape ball cricket demanding a minor fee at the Railway Cricket Ground Sargodha.

After one year, one of his close friends suggested he join the Faisal Cricket Club in Sargodha. Faisal Cricket Club is one of the biggest cricket clubs in Sargodha. At that time, the late Sohail Amjad was the coach of Faisal Cricket Club. Hafeez started playing hardball cricket under his leadership.

After a short period of time, he was selected for his school team back in the 1990s.

Chapter 2

 The City of Sargodha

Sargodha, known for its agricultural significance, is a city that breathes sports. With numerous cricket clubs and enthusiastic youngsters, the city has produced many talented cricketers. For Hafeez, Sargodha was more than just a hometown; it was the foundation of his cricketing journey. The city’s vibrant sports culture and the local cricketing tournaments played a crucial role in shaping his early career. The community support and the fierce local competitions laid the groundwork for Hafeez’s disciplined approach and competitive spirit.

Hafeez’s house was in a factory area, in the small town of Sargodha. He still owns that house despite shifting his family to Lahore afterward due to cricketing reasons. One of the biggest reasons why most of the Pakistani National cricketers shift to Lahore after playing Nationals is the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

He was then selected in under 19’s for Faisalabad region where he scored a lot of runs. Back then it was very rare to make a spot in the team as the opener because of the competition in the Pakistani team.

Chapter 3

 The Beginnings in Tape-Ball Cricket

Like many Pakistani cricketers, Hafeez’s first tryst with cricket was through tape-ball cricket. This variant of the game played with a tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape, is immensely popular in Pakistan. It allowed young Hafeez to develop quick reflexes and adapt to different playing conditions. Tape-ball cricket matches in the narrow streets of Sargodha taught him the importance of precision and innovation. Hafeez’s prowess in these local games quickly gained him a reputation, earning him a spot in local clubs where his talent was further nurtured.

Hafeez first played local matches at the Railway Cricket Ground of Sargodha. Then went to Faisal Cricket Club.
