England resumed their second innings on the fourth morning of Pakistan vs England with 36 for two, but were bowled out for 144 runs by the spin combo of Sajid Khan and Noman Ali. Interestingly, all 20 English wickets were taken by the spinners. Noman Ali bagged 8 wickets in the second innings and Sajid Khan took 2.
Pakistan vs England Day 3
Pakistan set England a difficult winning target of 297 and then reduced the touring side to 36 for two on an eventful third day of the second test, keeping them on track for a series-levelling win on Thursday.
Salman Agha, who was dropped twice early in his innings, hit a combative 63 as Pakistan scored 221 all out in the spin-dominated encounter.
It left England with a large total to win the match and take a 2-0 lead in the three-test series, but their batters battled against the turning ball on a wicket where spinners from both teams have performed well.
England, currently 261 runs behind their goal, will look to vice-captain Ollie Pope and batting mainstay Joe Root to get their chase back on track when play resumes on Friday.
Earlier, Sajid Khan took seven wickets as Pakistan bowled England out for 291 at the Multan Cricket Stadium, giving them a comfortable lead of 75. England resumed on 239-6 and lost their final four wickets in the first hour.
Sajid, an off-spinner, dismissed Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts, and Shoaib Bashir for an outstanding 7-111 total.
The following three wickets were taken by left-arm spinner Noman Ali, as England lost all ten to Pakistan’s spin-heavy attack, with Aamer Jamal the lone seamer.
Recognizing the characteristics of the track, England captain Ben Stokes started with spin at both ends, pairing off-spinner Bashir with left-arm spinner Jack Leach. Stokes continued to use spin even after Leach was rested, bringing in part-time off-spinner Root.
Bashir struck first, catching Pakistan opener Abdullah Shafique behind for four runs. England successfully reviewed the original not-out decision, and replays confirmed the smallest of margins.
Bashir (4-66) then removed Shan Masood for 11 in the second Pakistan vs England test when the Pakistan skipper attempted to flick a ball and gave an edge to Ollie Pope at second slip.
Opener Saim Ayub (22) appeared relaxed until succumbing to the same Pope-Bashir combination in the final delivery before the lunch break. Kamran Ghulam, who hammered a century in his debut test innings, scored a fluent 26 before being caught lbw by Leach.
Carse dismissed Mohammad Rizwan for 23, but could only watch in dismay as wicketkeeper Jamie Smith and slip fielder Root dropped regulation catches after the seamer produced two edges in three deliveries from Salman.
Salman went on to score 65 runs with Sajid (22) for the ninth wicket before being dismissed by Carse. England stumbled early in their victory quest.
Ben Duckett, who struck a quick hundred in the first innings, was dismissed for a two-ball duck after fluffing his sweep shot against Sajid.
Zak Crawley (three) did not last long either, being stumped by left-arm spinner Noman Ali’s flighted ball.
Root reverse-swept the penultimate delivery of the day for a four, signaling that he would not let Pakistan’s spinners dictate terms.
