How PCB Earns Money from the Pakistan Super League

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is more than a cricket tournament. It’s a financial engine for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). By smartly managing media rights, sponsorships, and franchise models, the PCB earns significant revenue from PSL every year.

PCB Earns Big from PSL Broadcasting Rights

The largest share of PCB’s income comes from broadcast deals. In 2022, PCB signed a two-year broadcasting contract worth Rs 4.35 billion (approx. $24 million). The PSL’s broadcast rights are divided into:

  • TV broadcasting (PTV Sports, Ten Sports, A Sports)
  • Digital streaming (Daraz, Tapmad, and others)

For PSL 9 and 10 (2024–2025), media rights grew further, reflecting the league’s rising popularity and global viewership.

PCB Makes Money from PSL Title Sponsorship Deals

PCB signs multi-crore title sponsorship deals with brands like:

  • HBL (Main Title Sponsor since 2016)
  • TikTok, OPPO, and Brighto Paints as official partners

In 2021, HBL renewed its sponsorship for Rs 391.7 million per year. These deals directly fill PCB’s financial coffers and help fund domestic cricket.

Franchise Fees Add Steady Revenue to PCB

Each PSL team pays an annual franchise fee to PCB. Initial team sale prices ranged from:

  • Islamabad United – $1.5 million
  • Karachi Kings – $2.6 million
  • Multan Sultans (resold in 2018) – $6.35 million

In total, PCB receives $15–20 million annually from franchise licensing. This remains a consistent income stream regardless of on-field performance.

PCB Earns a Share from Ticket Sales and Gate Revenue

While franchises host the matches, the PCB takes a cut from ticket sales. Big matches like finals and Karachi vs Lahore sell out in hours. For PSL 2023, ticket sales for playoffs and finals crossed Rs 200 million. PCB and franchises share the profits as per agreements.

Digital Media, Ads & Ground Sponsorships Boost Earnings

The Pakistan Cricket Board sells stadium branding rights — LED boards, dugout sponsors, and in-ground activations. Sponsors like Sprite, KFC, Jazzcash, Inverex, and Jubilee Life Insurance pay premium rates. Digital content, like highlights, reels, and behind-the-scenes clips, also generate ad revenue on platforms like YouTube and TikTok.

PSL Increases PCB’s Global Cricketing Influence

The financial success of PSL helps board:

  1. Fund domestic infrastructure
  2. Host more international matches
  3. Provide better salaries to national and domestic players

The league has also enhanced Pakistan’s cricket brand globally.

Final Word: PSL Is PCB’s Cash Cow

Through broadcasting, sponsorship, and franchise fees, Pakistan Cricket Board earns millions every year from the PSL. It’s not just about cricket —it’s a sustainable business model that strengthens Pakistan’s cricket ecosystem. As the league expands and digital viewership grows, PCB’s revenue from PSL is expected to reach new heights.
