Bunny-Hop Dismissals! ICC Introduces Stricter Rules

ICC Banned Bunny Hop Boundary catches

The End of Bunny-Hop Dismissals

Cricket’s governing body is taking decisive action to close loopholes in boundary catch rules. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has proposed significant changes to prevent fielders from exploiting airborne catches near the ropes. These amendments, set to take full effect by 2026, aim to preserve fairness while still allowing spectacular fielding efforts. ICC Introduces Stricter Rules for Boundary Catches: The End of Bunny-Hop Dismissals.

The move comes after increasing debate over catches like Michael Neser’s controversial 2023 dismissal, where he used multiple jumps outside the boundary to complete a catch.

Why the ICC is Revising Boundary Catch Rules

The Rising Controversy Over Bunny-Hop Catches

In recent years, fielders have pushed the limits of boundary catches with acrobatic efforts that test the laws of physics—and fairness. While these catches often produce highlight-reel moments, they’ve also sparked debates about whether they violate the spirit of cricket.

The Infamous “Bunny-Hop” Catch

The tipping point came when Australia’s Michael Neser executed a stunning catch in 2023, where he:

– First touched the ball inside the boundary

– Ran outside the ropes

– Jumped multiple times (“bunny-hopped”) while tapping the ball mid-air

– Finally completed the catch after re-entering the field

Though technically legal, this tactic raised eyebrows, with many arguing it gave fielders an unfair advantage. The ICC has now stepped in to prevent such exploits.

Key Changes in the New Regulations

1. First Contact Must Be Inside the Boundary

– Fielders must be fully grounded inside the boundary when first touching the ball.

– If airborne, they must have jumped from within the playing area.

2. No Multiple Airborne Touches Outside

– Fielders can’t repeatedly tap the ball while airborne outside the boundary.

– After the first touch, they must land inside before further contact.

3. Stricter Rules for Relay Catches

– If a fielder parries the ball to a teammate, they must land inside the boundary.

– Failure to do so results in an automatic boundary.

4. One Airborne Attempt Only

– A fielder gets just one chance to touch the ball while airborne outside.

– Any subsequent contact must occur inside the playing area.

 Catches That Remain Legal

Harleen Deol’s 2021 Stunner – The Indian fielder’s incredible effort against England involved a single mid-air touch outside before landing inside. This remains valid under the new rules.

Alex Hales’ Boundary Save – Similar to Deol’s catch, Hales’ effort in the Big Bash League complied with the revised regulations.

Catches That Would Now Be Banned

  • Michael Neser’s “Bunny-Hop” Catch – His multi-tap effort outside the boundary would no longer count as a legal dismissal.
  • Any Multi-Jump Relay Catch – Fielders can’t use repeated jumps outside the ropes to keep the ball in play.

A Shift in Boundary Fielding Strategies

Teams will need to rethink how they position fielders near the ropes. The new rules discourage overly risky aerial attempts, meaning:

  • More emphasis on clean one-handed catches.
  • Fewer “last-second” relay efforts involving multiple players.

Will This Reduce Spectacular Catches?

While the changes limit some creativity, they don’t eliminate jaw-dropping efforts. Fielders can still pull off stunning grabs—just without exploiting the boundary loophole. Expect more athletic dives and fewer mid-air juggling acts.

When Will the New Rules Take Effect?

Immediate Changes: Some adjustments take effect this season.

Full Implementation: The boundary catch modifications will be enforced from 2026 after MCC approval.

Reactions from Players and Experts

Support for the Changes

Many former players, including fielding legends like Jonty Rhodes, have welcomed the move. They argue it maintains the balance between innovation and fairness.

Criticism from Innovators

Some modern fielders, known for their boundary-line heroics, feel the rules limit creativity. They argue that spectacular catches add excitement to the game.

Conclusion: A Fairer Future for Cricket?

The ICC’s decision marks a significant step toward clarifying boundary catch rules. While it may reduce some theatrics, it ensures a fairer contest between bat and ball. Fans can still expect breathtaking fielding—just within clearer, more consistent guidelines.
