Wasim Akram Wants Pakistan and India to Resume Test Cricket

Wasim Akram on India-Pakistan Test Cricket Future

Wasim Akram on India-Pakistan Test Cricket Future

Legendary Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram has voiced a strong opinion on the future of India-Pakistan cricket, insisting that the two arch-rivals should return to playing Test matches against each other. Speaking ahead of the Asia Cup 2025, where both sides could meet up to three times in 14 days, Akram called the encounters exciting but highlighted the need for discipline from both players and fans.

“I am sure these matches will be entertaining, just like all other India-Pakistan matches. But I hope both the players and the fans will remain disciplined and not cross the line,” Akram told Telecom Asia Sport.

India-Pakistan Rivalry Limited to Tournaments

Despite being two of cricket’s biggest teams, India and Pakistan no longer play bilateral series due to political tensions. Their meetings are restricted to ICC events such as the World Cup, Asia Cup, and Champions Trophy. Akram, however, believes that Test cricket between the two nations would not only revive a historic rivalry but also provide fans with the kind of intensity and drama that only the longest format can offer.

A Rivalry Frozen Since 2007

The last time India and Pakistan played a Test match was in Bengaluru in December 2007. Since then, the rivalry has been limited to shorter formats. Historically, the two nations have faced each other in 59 Tests, with Pakistan winning 12, India winning 9, and 38 ending in draws. The high number of draws underlines the competitive balance between the sides during their Test encounters.

For fans on both sides of the border, the absence of Test cricket has left a major void. Akram’s comments reignite the debate about whether political barriers should continue to block one of cricket’s greatest rivalries.

Calls for a Renewed Contest

Wasim Akram, who himself starred in many classic encounters against India, said that while ODIs and T20Is provide entertainment, Test cricket remains the true test of skill, patience, and temperament. His statement comes at a time when global cricket bodies, including the ICC, have often expressed hope of seeing the two nations play more frequently. However, the chances of a Test series revival remain uncertain.

What’s Next for India-Pakistan Cricket?

As of now, cricket fans will have to be content with the Asia Cup 2025 and the T20 World Cup as the stage for these fierce clashes. But Akram’s words reflect the wishes of millions who want to see India and Pakistan meet not just in knockout tournaments, but also in the traditional five-day format.

For now, the dream of an India-Pakistan Test series remains on hold. Yet, with voices like Wasim Akram’s growing louder, the debate is far from over.
