ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024

The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 will happen in USA and WI from the 2nd to the 29th of June.

ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 will be the ninth edition of the T20 International cricket tournament organized by ICC. The USA and West Indies will jointly host the tournament. A total of 20 teams will be participating in the tournament which is the highest number ever in any ICC tournament before. The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will start on the 2nd of June.

It is the first time that the ICC Mega Event is going to be held in the United States. A record-breaking 20 teams are participating, expanded from 16 in 2022. The defending champions are England. They beat Pakistan in the finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The top 8 teams from the previous edition have qualified directly while others came by participating in the qualifiers of their regions. A total of 55 matches will be played over 27 days. This time, history will be made when Pakistan and India will play against each other first team in New York City.

Format of the Tournament

20 teams have qualified for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. These 20 teams are divided into four groups of five teams each. The top two teams will play in the Super 8 stage. Again two groups will be made of those 8 teams. The top two from each group will then qualify for the Semifinals. The finals of the tournament will be played on 29TH of June.

Selection of the Hosts

In November 2021, the International Cricket Council announced that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 was going to be held in the USA and West Indies. A joint bid was submitted by both the boards. As a result, a collaborative partnership was made between both associations. The ICC hopes that by hosting a Mega Event, the USA will also become renowned in the cricketing world.

Qualification Scenario of 20 Teams

The top eight teams from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 and the two hosts qualified automatically for the tournament. The remaining two automatic qualification places were taken by the best-ranked teams in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings which had not already secured a place in the finals, as of 14 November 2022.

The eight remaining places were filled via the ICC’s regional qualifiers, consisting of two teams from Africa, Asia, and Europe, along with one team each from the Americas and the East Asia-Pacific groups. In May 2022, the ICC confirmed the sub-regional qualification pathways for Europe, East Asia-Pacific, and Africa.

In July 2023, Ireland and Scotland from the Europe Qualifier became the first two teams to qualify, followed by Papua New Guinea from the East Asia-Pacific Qualifier. Canada secured their qualification in October 2023 after defeating Bermuda in their final match in the Americas Qualifier. The following month, Nepal and Oman qualified after reaching the final of the Asia Qualifier, followed by Namibia and Uganda becoming the final two teams to qualify after ensuring a top-two finish in the Africa Qualifier. Zimbabwe became the only Test-playing country that failed to qualify.

Venues for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024

A total of three venues in the USA and six in the Caribbean will be used for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. Ten of the 20 teams will play their first match of the 29-day tournament in the USA, with 16 contests to be held in Lauderhill, Dallas, and New York, and the blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan scheduled for the new Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in Long Island on 9 June.

Forty-one matches will be played in the Caribbean across six different islands, with the semi-finals in Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana and the title decider scheduled to be played in Barbados on 29 June.

The tournament will commence on the 1st of June with co-hosts USA taking on neighbors Canada, while fellow hosts the West Indies will play Papua New Guinea in Guyana on the second day of group play.
