Jason Gillespie Defends Pakistan’s Squad Selection amid Kamran Ghulam Exclusion

Jason Gillespie

Jason Gillespie backs PCB’s decision to exclude Kamran Ghulam from Pakistan’s Test squad despite his strong domestic form, emphasizing squad consistency.

In a recent squad announcement for the first Test against England, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) revealed a 15-member team, marking the return of fast bowling all-rounder Aamir Jamal and left-arm spinner Noman Ali. The decision to leave out Kamran Ghulam, despite his consistent performances in domestic cricket, raised eyebrows, prompting former cricketer Salman Butt to seek insights from Jason Gillespie during a live commentary session.

Jason Gillespie, a renowned former cricketer, responded to the queries surrounding Ghulam’s exclusion, acknowledging the player’s significant domestic achievements. Ghulam had also been part of the Pakistan squad for the recent Bangladesh Tests alongside Mohammad Ali and the injured Khurram Shahzad. However, Jason Gillespie noted that the selection committee had opted for continuity and consistency, sticking with the current squad.

“Kamran Ghulam and Mohammad Ali, who were part of the Bangladesh Test squad, remain in the selectors’ plans,” clarified the PCB in their official statement. According to Jason Gillespie, Ghulam’s exclusion was not due to a lack of form but was instead rooted in the selectors’ strategy to limit the squad size while maintaining continuity. The 15-member squad, in the selectors’ view, was sufficient for the upcoming Test against England, and players like Ghulam were encouraged to stay match-ready by participating in domestic tournaments such as the Champions One-Day Cup and the President’s Cup.

When asked directly by Salman Butt during the Champions One-Day Cup Eliminator 1 commentary between Lions and Stallions, Jason Gillespie reiterated his respect for Kamran Ghulam’s talent and performance. He specifically mentioned Ghulam’s strong performances during Pakistan Sheheen’s tour of Darwin. However, Gillespie stressed the importance of showing faith in the current team. “His form has been acknowledged, but we’re showing faith and patience in our current squad,” Gillespie stated.

Despite Jason Gillespie’s defense of the PCB’s decision, many fans and pundits continue to question the selection criteria, especially given Ghulam’s remarkable domestic record. The coming months will reveal whether the PCB’s emphasis on consistency will pay off or if Kamran Ghulam’s exclusion will continue to be a hot topic.
