The BCCI secretary Jay Shah is set to become the New ICC Chairman in place of Greg Barclay who has confirmed leaving his spot at the end of his tenure.
Jay Shah is the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. This news would also play a key role for India’s Participation in ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The Champions Trophy would likely be played in February and March in which India’s participation is yet to be confirmed. What role can Jay Shah play in this? We’ll have to wait and watch.
During a video conference, Barclay informed ICC directors, including Cricket Australia’s chairman Mike Baird, that he has no intention of seeking the position for a third term. His decision came after he learned of Jay Shah’s plans to replace him in November. Shah has the support of the cricket boards of England and Australia, giving him the numbers to become the ICC’s chief.
“Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new chair commencing on 1 December 2024.”
According to ICC rules, the chairman’s election requires 16 votes, and the winner must now have a simple majority of nine votes (51%). Previously, to become chairman, the incumbent needed a two-thirds vote.
The majority of the 16 voting members regard Jay Shah favorably. Shah currently has another year as BCCI secretary before entering a 3-year resting period beginning in October 2025.
According to the Supreme Court-approved BCCI constitution, an office bearer can serve for six years before being subjected to a 3-year resting period. A person can hold office for a total of 18 years. 9 years in the state and 9 years in the BCCI.
If Jay Shah decides to move to the ICC with a year of secretary ship remaining, he will have four years left in the BCCI.
